Making a Living in the 21st Century
Introduction
The work environment of the 21st century is much less structured than in the past. Employees are sought after for their skills and what they can do for an organization more than for their education and what they have done in the past. They are expected to be effective decision makers who are equally comfortable working independently or within a team. Flexibility is a must to adapt to changing market requirements.
Labour Market Information is an official guide about the schooling requirements, salary range, working conditions and projected availability of certain careers and occupations. It is but one component of a job search and should be used as a tool to measure the difficulty or ease of pursuing a certain career by alerting you to any potential obstacles.
Traditional definitions of work. Because the number of 'permanent' job opportunities is dwindling, we need to be aware that part-time, contract, term, and casual work positions may be our options for 'steady' work. Sometimes a combination of two o more of these may be required to earn a 'full' income. The benefit is that working in this manner allows you to demonstrate flexibility and a variety of skills, both essential employable assets.
