Exploring Your Personal Visioning
Introduction
A personal vision is our mind's eye view of how we wish our work world and our lives to be. Personal vision is made up of our values, interests, skills and beliefs. It forms the basis of all decisions about career and job selection. Once we have clarity about our personal vision we are able to measure our actions and decisions as being either supportive or detrimental to our personal goals. Personal visioning is an important starting point when making any decision. See the Entrepreneurial Decision-Making Cycle.
Values are the set of beliefs we have about our work and life. They guide our actions. By understanding our values, and considering them in our career and job decisions, we can make better decisions about what is right for us in the world of work.
Our interests are key components when deciding the type of work we wish to pursue. Identifying our interests and using them as a reasonable checklist for job descriptions allows us to seek out careers that will let us follow a passion and use our talents and abilities.
Skills identification helps us to define our skills and goes beyond our previous job descriptions to encompass our natural talents and abilities. Our skills may have been developed over time and from a variety of experiences. Transferable skills can be used in any job setting and will enhance our employability.
